A week of boat-access-only skiing in remote Northern Norway

Step aboard Moondance, a 57ft expedition sailing vessel, and experience a rare and raw journey through the fjords of Finnmark. This alpine-sailing expedition offers first descents on untouched snow, intimate anchorages, steep couloirs, mellow bowls, and vast glaciers—without the crowds.

With room for only six guests and a flexible route guided by conditions, this journey blends deep nature, ski adventure, and Arctic sailing into an unforgettable experience.

Your Base: Moondance Expedition Yacht

Built for Arctic conditions, Moondance is a Koopmans 56 with a central lounge, berths for nine, a bathroom with shower, generous heating, and ample storage for ski gear. Designed for long-range expeditions, it combines comfort and performance.

How to Get There

Fly to Alta (ALF), with connections via Oslo. From the airport, it’s a short drive to the harbour. Depending on conditions, embarkation may also take place in Oksfjord (2 hours away). You’ll be informed well in advance. Arrival is from 12:00 on day one. Departure by 12:00 on the final day.

Sample Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Arrival in Alta, welcome on board, gear check, and first sail
  • Day 2 – Warm-up ski tour and exploration of nearby terrain
  • Day 3 – Summit on Stjernøya or Seiland, ski down to the fjord
  • Day 4 – Glacier or couloir missions, depending on conditions
  • Day 5 – Recovery morning, optional sauna, short tour or scenic sailing
  • Day 6 – Final alpine adventure
  • Day 7 – Return sail and disembarkation at noon

Life on Board

This is a real expedition. Flexibility, teamwork, and a positive attitude are key. Guests are encouraged to participate in everyday routines, such as helping with cooking, sailing, and route decisions. The space is cozy but well-managed. Regular check-ins ensure that your experience aligns with expectations.

  • The menu includes hearty and healthy meals made from local and seasonal ingredients.
  • Breakfast: fresh bread, eggs, fruit
  • Lunch: warm dishes or sandwiches for touring days
  • Dinner: pasta, self-caught fish, curries, Asian dishes, and local recipes
  • Snacks: cheese, energy bars, nuts, and chips
  • Special dietary requests can be accommodated with advance notice.

Who It’s For

This voyage is ideal for intermediate to advanced ski tourers with good fitness and a taste for real adventure. It is also open to those new to sailing, with onboard instruction available. Guests should be comfortable with long days in varied mountain terrain.
