Top Reasons to go skiing in April

Top Reasons to go skiing in April

The Best Ski Days Come Later Than You Think

There’s this moment every year when the cities start to feel like spring. Coffee outside. Lighter jackets. People talking about summer. And at the same time, up here in the mountains, it’s often just getting really, really good. The past three days in the Arlberg have been exactly that. Not “good for this time of year” — just genuinely some of the best skiing of the whole season.

On piste, everything feels solid and smooth in the morning. The kind of snow that gives you confidence in every turn. And off-piste… it’s just fun. Deep enough, stable enough, soft in the right moments.

You don’t ski carefully — you ski freely. You don’t need to worry whether there is rock you are going to hit once you do a turn.

There’s no constant thought in the back of your head about what’s underneath. No hesitation when you want to open up your turns a bit more, let them flow. It’s just there. A base that’s been building all winter, now finally doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

And I think that’s something many people underestimate.

Because the myth is still there:

“That by Easter, there’s no snow left.”

But if you look at places like Lech-Zuers— or really anywhere across the Alps — the data shows the opposite. Snow depths are at their peak around this time. Storms still come through. The mountain is full.

It’s not the end of the season.

It’s the moment where everything comes together. What I personally love most about skiing now is the rhythm of the day. You start early. There’s that fresh, slightly cold air, quiet slopes, a kind of clarity that you only get in the morning. Then the sun comes up higher, and you feel it. Not aggressively — just enough to soften things, to make everything a bit more forgiving.

  • At some point, you sit down on a terrace.
  • Jacket open. Sunglasses on. Just taking it in.
  • (And yes — don’t forget sunscreen.)

That balance — between performance and ease — is what makes this time so special.

It actually reminds me of something Wolfgang Ambros once described: that skiing is the most beautiful thing you can imagine from the song SKIFOAN!

And honestly, it’s true.

Not because it’s extreme or dramatic.

But because it feels complete.

  • You have the snow.
  • You have the light.
  • You have space.

Often fewer people on the mountain, but the ones who are there — they get it. There’s this quiet, shared understanding that this is a really good moment to be here.

Even the small things align.

You’ll find good offers in the sports shops. Things feel a bit more relaxed. Less rushed.

And still, every year, the same question comes up:

“Is it still worth going skiing in April?”

I never fully understand where that comes from.

Because for me, March and April have always been two of the best months of the entire season.

So maybe this is just a small reminder. The Best Ski Days Come Later Than You Think

If you’re thinking about skiing — don’t stop too early.

  • Come up.
  • Go for a few turns.
  • Stay a bit longer on the mountain.

Because right now, it’s not winding down.

It’s actually pretty close to perfect.

And if you want to experience it in the best possible way, with the right timing, the right lines, and a bit of local insight — Inside the Arlberg is here.

Just come up and enjoy life.

Ski Love
Nina
